The authors outline a number of propositions to be considered in the management of severe chronic pain, and stress the importance of psychological aspects. Criteria to be met by drugs of choice are enumerated. From the outstanding results achieved in 84 out of 91 patients treated with the morphinnmimetic compound, bezitramide, and the neuroleptic, droperidol, it is concluded that these drugs very largely meet the requirements.
