CARDIOVASCULAR EFFECTS OF ALTHESIN IN PATIENTS WITH CARDIAC PATHOLOGY
Preliminary Communication
The Middlesex Hospital Mortimer Street, London W.I.
The arterial pressure and electrocardiogram were monitored in five patients in whom anaesthesia was induced with Althesin prior to cardiac surgery involving cardio-pulmonary bypass. The results were compared with those obtained in seven patients in whom anaesthesia was induced with nitrous oxide and oxygen supplemented with phenoperidine and diazepam. In all five patients about to undergo cardiac surgery involving bypass procedures induced with Althesin, arterial pressure fell by more than 40% and was associated with tachycardia. Immediately following induction, pan-curonium bromide 8 mg was given. There was a rise in arterial pressure in each patient after intubation.
